The list
This is No. 30 in the series. Please read my introduction and explanation here.
This is the last installment of my series on why I left the Roman Catholic Church. What am I going to do with myself now? I’m sure I’ll have some other things to say about life and truth and faith, and that I’ll occasionally come back to this subject. But for now, I’m happy to leave it for awhile.
If you’ve found my posts enlightening or maddening…please let me know by leaving a comment below. If you want to review a post or read one for the first time, here’s the list:
- The Church’s undue and unscriptural attention to and magnification of Mary
- The sacrificial nature of the Mass
- Transubstantiation – the Eucharist
- Her claim to be the one, true church
- Salvation by faith plus works
- The Church distinguished by apostolic succession
- Tradition – equally authoritative with Scripture
- Purgatory
- Indulgences – drawing down debt
- Required abstinences
- The confessional
- Directions for naming children
- Addressing clergy as Father
- Inordinate power and control
- Historical immorality of popes
- Elevation and exaltation of the papacy
- Saints, statues, and superstition
- Cult of saints
- Withholding and mishandling of Scripture
- Sex scandal and cover-up
- Divorced? No problem. Never married!
- Forbidding marriage to clergy
- Mortal and venial sins
- Doublespeak
- Infant baptism that washes away sin
- Marian apparitions
- Sacred talismans and holy water
- Relics of saints
- Oppressive oversight of the offering
- Laws, laws, and more laws
I agree with several of your criticisms of the Catholic Church. Have you considered the Anglican Church? I think the Anglican Church has some of what’s best about Protestantism, without losing what’s most important and true in the Catholic Church.

Thank you, but I’m well-plugged-in to a non-denominational church and I like it there. I personally would not want to align myself with any particular denomination. Not that I couldn’t worship with them, but I wouldn’t be a member.

Dear sister Caroline,
Thank you for sharing your journey to find a truthful and healthy relationship with Jesus Christ. I see a lot of inspirational truth on your website, but as a lifelong Catholic I also see a lot of serious problems. Briefly, I’m a married, hospital laboratory scientist who has studied Catholic apologetics for decades. Everyone should know that Catholic parents and religious priests and sisters are capable of misrepresenting their faith by words and deeds. All Christians should know that professional anti-Catholics severely misrepresent Catholic teaching and most non-Catholic Christians have been infected with their errors. It is my sincere hope and prayer that all sincere Christians would (humbly and prayerfully) take their list of Catholic objections to a faithful, qualified, Catholic resource like Catholic Answers (catholic.com). Their Catholic website is #2 for visits after the Vatican’s (vatican.va), with many free resources. Enter your keywords (like: Mary, sacrifice of the Mass, transubstantiation, Eucharist, true church, necessity of works, apostolic succession, scripture and tradition, purgatory, indulgences, fasting, contraception, confession, naming children, calling priests “father”, authority of the pope, what’s your authority, scandalous popes, peter and the papacy, saint worship, statues, divorce and remarriage, celibacy and the priesthood, mortal and venial sins, infant baptism, necessity of baptism, marian apparitions, private revelation, sacred talisman, holy water, relics, and more) into the search box at catholic, com. I would also recommend meeting the converts and reverts (back) to the Catholic Church found on EWTN’s TV program, “The Journey Home”. Host Marcus Grodi (a former Presbyterian minister) has helped over 2,000 pastors convert to the Catholic Church through The Coming Home Network (chnetwork.org). Simply enter “Journey Home Classics” into the youtube.com search box. Two files near the top have a total of about 600 of the best one hour videos. My favorites include: Scott Hahn, Tim Staples, Stephen Ray, Rosalind Moss, David Currie, Patrick Madrid, Jimmy Akin, Bruce Sullivan, Kristine Franklin, Thomas Smith, Johnette Benkovic, Ken Hensley, Kimberly Hahn, Steve Wood, David Palm, Jeff Cavins, Michael Cumbie, Carl Olson, and Fr. Ray Ryland. And finally, I hope to meet you someday, Caroline – this side of eternity – so please email me when you can and God be with you! Sincerely, your brother Vince

Thanks for taking the time to comment, Vince. Have you read any of my posts on this list? You’d see that I am familiar with catholic.com and use them for a resource. As well as the Catholic Catechism. If you’d like to interact about any of my specific posts on the Catholic Church I’d be happy to engage with you as much as I have the time for. But please keep your comments brief and addressing one point at a time.
