God is our refuge (and oh, how we need one)

If you follow the news at all, you know that the world is a dangerous place. I warned of one specific danger in my previous post, i.e. those who follow an ideology of conquest. Others have warned of the extinction of all humanity via artificial intelligence, an extremely deadly pandemic, or climate change. Wars rage, cyber sabotage threatens, Iran promises payback.

I often wonder how any of our nation’s leaders handle the many threats that we are continually under. Or how other ordinary folk like myself face the fear those threats may engender. I do get a little fearful at times, but then I remember that God is in control and that if I should lose my life in a cataclysmic event, another much better one begins.

And I think of how much safer we’d all be if we truly were a nation “under God” and his authority. There’s no way our leaders can know everything that bad actors, be they nations or individuals, are planning. But God can, and does. Those leaders, if they are believers in the true God, can know that he is a giver of wisdom, direction, and protection and they can call on him for all that. I just don’t see how any human can manage the threats without him.

Last year at the memorial for Charlie Kirk we saw and heard many of our political leaders boldly proclaim faith in God and call upon him for mercy and guidance. As threats to our freedoms and very lives increase, we need to likewise increase our dependence on God and be unafraid to include him in our conversations and debates.

And if one objects because not all believe in the God of the Bible, then a discussion in search of the truth based on evidence should be paramount. What could be more important than knowing if God exists and what he is like?

Fear is a blessing if it drives us to God, and “the fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom.” Churches were packed in the days following 9/11. Let’s not wait for another one before we acknowledge our need for him and seek to know him.
